Obituary of George Forrester Shivers, Jr.

Retired Colonel George F. Shivers, Jr. passed away Thursday, November 30, 2023, in an Augusta Health Care Facility. 

Col. Shivers, known to many as Sonny,  was born during the Great Depression in Long Branch, New Jersey to the late George F. Shivers Sr. (Retired Air Force) and Sara Evans Shivers.  With family roots in Lamar County, Georgia, he had become a longtime resident of Martinez in Columbia County, Georgia.   Although Sonny had a successful second career upon his military retirement, he was most proud of his service to this country, dutifully serving in the United States Army. 

Preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary “Jean” Taylor, he is survived by 2 daughters – Cathy Shivers Kinney and Monica Didier, both of Atlanta; 1 son – Patrick F. Shivers (Tara) of Martinez; 4 grandchildren – Cheryl McKenzie of Martinez,  Jennifer Hansen (Clint) of Grovetown, Ray McKenzie Jr. (Natasha) of Grovetown, and Leo Solarte (Jenny) of Chicago. He is also survived by 8 great-grandchildren -  Tiana, Anthony, Mya, Peyton, Carter, Vincent, Nicholas, and Palmer.

A private family service will be conducted from the Graveside, on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at 2 O’clock in the Milner Baptist Cemetery with Pastor David Dawson officiating.
