Obituary of Dean Houk

Mr. Dean Clifton Houk, age 88, of Barnesville passed away Sunday, February 13, 2011 in a Bibb County Hospital. Mr. Houk was the first child born to the late Mr. Drewery Houk and the late Mrs. Mary Alverta Houk on September 14, 1922 in Independence, Virginia. Mr. Houk volunteered for the United States Navy during World War II, where he served from 1942 until 1945. He graduated from Milligan College in 1948, Southwestern Theological Seminary in 1954, and the University of Toledo in 1967. Mr. Houk served as pastor of two churches in Georgia, Mt. Gilead in Griffin, and Shiloh Baptist in Thomaston before moving to Ohio. In the Toledo area he was the pastor of nine churches under the leadership of the Southern Baptist Mission Board while teaching Special Education for 27 years in the Oregon School System. His passion was for leading people to Christ. Mr. Houk was one of the founders of Little Children of the World, Inc., a ministry for street children and children at risk in Philippines and has been active and supportive since 1968. Mr. Houk moved to Carrolton, GA upon retirement and became a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church. Mr. Houk and his wife, of 66 years, Mrs. Peggy Carroll Houk lived in their country home until they moved to Barnesville, GA in 2008 and became members of the First Baptist Church of Barnesville. He was preceded in death by his brothers; Paul, Ralph, and Joe Houk. Survivors include: His Wife - Peggy Carroll Houk of Barnesville ; 4 Daughters - Glenna Waller (& Larry) of Barnesville ; Deanna Kaye Lovelady (& Byron) of Cumming ; Crystal Day Hedspeth (& Claude) of Katy TX ; & Trina Carroll Houk (& Chip Schneider) of Largo, FL ; 1 Brother - Ray Clark Houk ; 12 Grandchildren and 14 Great Grandchildren. Funeral services for Mr. Dean Houk will be conducted Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at 2 O’Clock in the First Baptist Church of Barnesville. Interment will be Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at 1 O’Clock in the McMinn Memory Gardens in Athens, TN. The family will receive friends at First Baptist Church of Barnesville on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 from 1 O’clock until the service hour.
