Obituary of Douglas Walter

Douglas David Walter of Barnesville passed away unexpectedly on Monday, September 19, 2011. Scoutmaster, outdoorsman, carpenter, and beloved friend, Capt. Doug was 54. Doug served in the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers in Alaska during the Vietnam era and was honorably discharged in 1980. A self-employed contractor, he was district commissioner for the Boy Scouts of America and Scoutmaster of Troop 17 for 15 years. During his term, all three of his sons earned Eagle Scout distinction. He was awarded the Golden Eagle Award by BSA in 2009 and was Barnesville-Lamar County’s Volunteer of the Year in 1997. He also coached Little League and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Barnesville. Survivors include: His Wife - Susan Wheeler Walter of Barnesville ; 3 Sons - Christopher David Walter (& Ursula) of Atlanta ; David Alexander Walter (& Samantha) of Atlanta ; & Matthew David Walter of Barnesville ; His Mother - Annie Walter of Newnan ; His Brother - Kevin Walter of Dalton ; & His Sister - Karey Walter of Atlanta. Memorial Services for Mr. Doug Walter will be conducted Friday, September 23, 2011 at 2 O’Clock in the First United Methodist Church of Barnesville with the Reverend Jay Tenney and the Reverend David Naglee officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
