Obituary of Samuel Taylor

Mr. Samuel Lorie Taylor, age 69, of Barnesville, GA, passed away on Wednesday, February 11, 2009 in Spalding County. Mr. Taylor was born December 23, 1939, in Lamar County, to the late Sam Taylor and the late Loryn “Shine” Sykes Taylor. Mr. Taylor was very active as a member of Rock Springs Church in Milner. Prior to his membership with Rock Springs, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Barnesville, where he took part in the Crusader’s Sunday School class, was Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and a member of The Methodist Men’s Club. In the past, Mr. Taylor was also Chairman of The Pastor-Parish Committee, Sunday School Superintendent, President of The Methodist Men’s Club, and a member of The Administrative Board. He was also a former City Councilman and, at one time, the owner of Tom’s Produce, as well as Georgia Chic. Mr. Samuel Lorie Taylor was the President of the Pike-Lamar Association for Retarded Citizens, a member of the Barnesville Kiwanis Club, a Mason and member of Pinta Lodge 88, and appointed to serve as volunteer mediator in the recent Barnesville-Lamar County land swap. He was a graduate of Gordon Military High School and served seven and a half years in the Army Reserve. His dedication to the community shows in the history of his Civic and Service Club work, which includes: former President and Director of the Barnesville Kiwanis Club, Director of the Pike-Lamar Association for Retarded Citizens, he was voted Outstanding District 12 Kiwanis President, Clean Community Commission (Chairman of Civic Club Division), and Director of the Barnesville-Lamar County Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Taylor served on the Governor’s Strategic Planning Committee for Barnesville-Lamar County, was President and Director of the Barnesville Jaycees, was voted Jaycee of the Year and Outstanding Region 8 President, and once served as State Vice President of the Jaycees. Survivors include: Mr. Taylor’s Wife, Josie Taylor of Barnesville; Stepson, Owen Adams of Barnesville; Stepdaughter, Tammie Shackelford and Husband Michael of Barnesville; Step-Grandson, Calvin Adams of Barnesville; Step-Granddaughter, Katie Jo Daniel of Barnesville; Brother, Merritt Taylor of Barnesville and a number of Other Relatives also survive. Funeral Services for Mr. Samuel Lorie Taylor will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2009 in the Chapel of Rock Springs Church at 3 PM. A visitation will take place on Friday, February 13, 2009 from 7PM – 9PM at Williams Funeral Home. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
