Obituary of William J. Webster

Lt. Colonel William J. Webster, age 93, of Barnesville, passed away on the 23 day, April, 2016, at 4:37 PM in his home surrounded by his family. Colonel Webster was born on January 1, 1923 in Grand Ridge, Florida, son of the late William Alexander, Jr. and Phoebe Singletary Webster. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 70 plus years, Estelle Pharr Webster. William J. was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church and retired from General Tire. He was a celebrated veteran of the United States Marine Corp after serving 24 years as an aviator. Lt. Colonel Webster was a graduate of Gordon Military High School and College. He earned his wings as a pilot in Pensacola, Florida and served in the Korean War, World War II, Cuban Crisis and Viet Nam. He and his family made Barnesville their home after he served at the Pentagon in Washington, DC. Survivors include his son, John A. Webster (Maureen) of Barnesville; three daughters, Joan Estelle Padgett (Larry) of Beaufort, SC, Nancy Ann Webster of Gainesville, GA, and Wanda Jean Hewitt (Glenn) of Barnesville. “Pop Pop” has 10 grandchildren, Chris Webster (Tasha), Natalie Rischbieter (Mark), Caroline Smith (Stephen), Elizabeth Render (Chris), William Thomas McElhinney III (Esther), James Lewis McElhinney (Laura), Emily Stansell (Jeremy), Blake Hewitt (Catherine), Webster Hewitt (Mandy) and Carter Hewitt; 13 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Sandra and Phoebe. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 on Wednesday, the 27th of April at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Garth Forster and grandson, Blake Hewitt officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends for visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 before the service at the church. Donations may be made to the First Baptist Church at 200 Zebulon Street, Barnesville, GA 30204 in his memory in lieu of flowers. Services are being arranged and directed by Breedlove Memorial Chapel, Barnesville, GA.
