Obituary of Clara Mae West Towns

Clara Mae West Towns, the daughter of John Marion West and Clara Ophelia Reeves West, was born on May 23, 1921. She peacefully entered the Gates of Heaven while at Home on April 7, 2016. A native of Atlanta, she began playing the piano in church at the age of 12, and worked at the State Capitol in Atlanta at the age of 16. Having attended West Georgia College in Carrollton, she went on to graduate from Georgia College for Women in Milledgeville. One of her greatest joys in Life was her association with the students at LaGrange College during her 30 years before retirement. She was a member of the Mountville United Methodist Women and the Mountville United Methodist Church, where she played the church organ for close to 40 years. Julia Traylor Dyar once wrote of her: ‘Mae Towns has been called a “One-Woman Chamber of Commerce” for her hometown of Mountville, where she is an active member and has held offices in the United Methodist Church and the Community Club.’ Preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Ferrell Travis Towns, Sr., she is survived by two sons, Ferrell Travis Towns Jr. and Marion Clay Towns, and one niece, Julia Towns. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 Saturday at Mountville United Methodist Church with Rev. Richard McMahan officiating. There will be a private burial at the Mountville Cemetery. The family will be at their home and receive friends at the Mountville United Methodist Church Friday evening from 7:00 until 9:00. It is the request of the family that flowers be omitted.
