Obituary of Peggy Tyus O'Dell

Mrs. Peggy Tyus O’Dell, age 92, a native of Barnesville, passed away Sunday, August 16, 2015, at her home. Mrs. O’Dell was born September 24, 1922, daughter of the late Lewis Calhoun and Dora Howard Tyus. She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church in The Rock. After graduating from Brenau College, Peggy went to Atlanta to work for the Red Cross during World War II. A friend at the Red Cross set her up on a blind date with a marine who was in Atlanta for training, Bill O’Dell. During college, Peggy was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. She remained an active alumnus and held many positions over the years working with the college chapters around Georgia. Peggy was also a proud member of the DAR, the Azalea Garden Club and Bridge Clubs in Barnesville. Although she had slowed down, she played bridge throughout 2014. Survivors include a son, John Tyus O’Dell and his wife, Terry, of Waldo, Wisconsin; daughter, Lisa O’Dell Newton and her husband, John, of Conyers; and four grandchildren, Robert Baxter and his wife, Nadine, of Marietta, Loraine O’Dell, Megan O’Dell and Amy O’Dell, all of Waldo, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill O’Dell and daughter, Margaret O’Dell Baxter. A Celebration of Life will be held at 6:00 pm on Saturday, October 17, 2015 in Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Greenwood Cemetery Preservation Association, Inc., 109 Forsyth Street Barnesville, GA 30204.
