James P. “Jim” Johnson, Jr. passed peacefully at his home on Lake Sinclair in Milledgeville, GA, on Thursday, February 23, 2023. After battling Alzheimer’s disease for several years, he now rests peacefully with our Lord and Savior. A Celebration of Life for Jim Johnson will be conducted Sunday, February 26, 2023 at 3:00pm in the Chapel of Williams Funeral Home and Crematory of Milledgeville with Rev. Bill Kitchen officiating. Inurnment will take place privately in the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Williams Funeral Home of Milledgeville on Sunday, February 26, 2023 from 2:00pm until the service hour. A native of Barnesville (Milner), Jim was born on October 5, 1936 to the late James P. Johnson, Sr. and the late Mary Francis Harris Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sister, Vicki Ann Waldroup, and his brother, Hoke Ishmael Johnson. Jim was a graduate of Milner School Class of 1954, and served the U.S. Air Force upon graduation where he was stationed in Japan. Upon his return, he enrolled in Gordon Military College, where he received his A.A. Degree and transferred to UGA to complete his studies in business. However, family illness required his return to Barnesville where he sought employment at the William Carter Company where he occupied several management roles. He later sought employment with the Federal Government and eventually began to serve the public assisting individuals with acquiring Social Security and Disability Benefits. He went on to retire as the manager of the Social Security Office in Milledgeville, Georgia, and continued to reside at Lake Sinclair, where he continued to serve the public as a Claimant Representative for denied disability claims. In addition to serving the public, Jim also served in multiple community organizations including the Lamar County Board of Education, Blazing Saddle Club, Worshipful Master in Pinta Lodge 88 (Masonic Lodge) in Barnesville. In Milledgeville, he was a member of the Milledgeville Rotary Club where he was a Will Watt Fellow, Paul Harris Fellow, Past Secretary and Past President, where he had perfect attendance for 20 years. He was an active member of Hardwick Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and Deacon Emeritus. Jim is survived by his wife of 31 years, Joyce M. Johnson, daughters Julie Johnson Vining (& Randy), Janet Johnson Presley along with their mother, Nellie Turner Johnson, stepsons Clint Chesnut and Chris Chesnut. Grandchildren Paige A. Corley (& Josh), J. Wyatt Wigglesworth (& Destiny), step-grandchildren Blake Chesnut, Zach Chesnut, Alex Chesnut, Denise Towery, Hank Towery and several great grandchildren.
