Obituary of Theodora "Dora" Elizabeth Cox
Mrs. Theodora “Dora” Elizabeth Cox 73 passed away at her home on Tuesday, July 11, 2023.
Dora was born on May 15, 1950, in Crestview, Florida to the late Few Alonzo Gunn and Mabel Thomson Gunn. Dora met her husband at the University of Georgia and married Gary Cox in 1971. She was an Air Force wife for the first 20 years of their marriage and followed Gary to fourteen different assignments while raising three children and finally getting her bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs-a degree she had started two decades previously at UGA. In 1993 the family moved to Barnesville, Georgia where Dora formed her own company, Dora Cox Realty, and became a significant participant in the city’s business life. Her involvement with the community included helping to organize “Bridgers” to promote inter-racial dialogue, and creating a reading program to get more quality books in the hands of elementary grade students. At the time of her final illness, she was working as a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution to bring greater understanding and appreciation of the unique attributes of this country’s early history and government. A member of Barnesville’s First United Methodist Church, she taught Sunday School, adult church classes, and for several years was the coordinator of the mid-week church suppers. Dora loved flowers and birds and she especially enjoyed walking her land. She never saw a tool she did not like.
She was preceded in death by her sister Rebecca Gunn.
Dora is survived by her husband of 52 years Gary Cox; daughter Kathleen David; two sons Andrew and Gareth Cox; brother Few Alonzo Gunn; and 6 grandchildren.
