I'm sad to be so late in hearing of Mrs. Watson's death and in expressing my heartfelt condolences to Gloria and Bert.
What a wonderful teacher she was - exacting for sure, but effective indeed on my ability to handle the language and literature down to this day. Wasn't the Barnesville of the 50's and 60's fortunate in the talent and dedication of it's teachers. God bless Mrs. Watson forever for handing on her love of language and culture to us.
Now the greatest generation of Spencer Street parents is almost gone. The Watson's, Nicholas's, Ethington's, Foshee's, Kennedy's, Dennis's, Bush's, Elliott's, Rawls's, and Keadle's have just about all entered their rest. Wasn't it a great neighborhood? What a great place and time to grow up!
Bert, Gloria, and all your family, you are in my prayers.
Pepper Elliott

My thoughts and prayers go out to your family for your loss. I had the privilege of having your mother as my Senior English teacher in 1979. She had a unique way of using her calm and positive manner to encouraged the best in her students and persuade them to excel. I have often thought of your mother over the years and lasting influence she has had on me as an individual.
God Bless You!

Gloria and Bert,
I have always loved your mother. I have such fond memories of when she began her teaching career at Gordon Grammar School. She taught me English and Social Studies in the 6th grade. I've always thought she was a beautiful lady - inside and out.
In recent years I have had the privilege of playing bridge with her, and what a bridge player she was! I considered her "the authority" when I had any questions.
I will treasure my memories of her and pray for you in the days ahead.

She was a wonderful woman and a wonderful teacher. She had a profound impact on my life by encouraging me to go into journalism. The result was a tremendously satisfying 37-year-career as a newspaper reporter and continuing free-lance work in retirement. I can't express enough gratitude. My sympathy to the family.

I offer my sincere Christian sympathy upon the loss of Ms Doris Watson. I was very fond of Doris and Forest at FUMC. Doris was always so complimentary of my sermons and songs. I took it with great pride, in that, I knew my grammar had to be acceptable!

Mrs. Watson was a gentle lady and a teacher who was the favorite of many. She maintained discipline in her classroom, yet she always wore a smile and spoke with kindness to her students. We were privileged to be in her English classes, and our vocabulary is definitely the better for it.
We will be praying for the family in the days to come that God will give you comfort and strength. Barnesville has truly lost one of its finest ladies.

When I think of Doris Watson I see her with her red lipstick on sitting behind her desk in a classroom on the basement floor of Lambdin Hall conducting our 9th Grade English class. She was always soft-spoken but at the same time prepared to give demerits if any of the cadets gave her trouble. I have given her credit many times over the past 50 years for making my word knowledge what it is today through that little book, "Word Power Made Easy", which I still have. She will always be one of my favorite teachers and will truly be missed.

Bert and family, I'm so very sorry to hear of your mom's death. I'd missed seeing her in church for quite awhile and she was one of the people I looked forward to seeing. Mrs. Doris taught me in fifth grade and again in high school and she had a large impact on my life. I know y'all will miss this special lady.
May God hold each of you close in the coming days. Cathy

Mrs. Watson was a very special teacher. I thought the world of her. She always pushed me to the limit because she knew I was capable of more and refused to let me settle for less. I credit her and Mrs. Freeman for getting through college. I also had the honor to be an editor with the high school publications in "the day." Her quiet demeanor was far more powerful than teachers who did yell. She has been a long-lasting influence and inspiration in my life. A few years ago I thought long and hard about her encouragement, love, and high goals she had for each of her students. I picked up the phone and called. We had a long conversation and I told her how much she has meant to me....she, I think, was embarrassed, humbled and surprised by the compliments I paid her.... I meant every single one.As a teacher, I recognize her influence in my career and hope that one day I have students as touched by me, as I was by her. My sympathies to her beloved family. May God provide the strength and courage to get though the days ahead. She was beloved by many, influenced even more, and was a blessing in my life. I will miss her!

I owe so much to Mrs. Watson. She was my senior English teacher and was the inspiration which led me to earning my degree in education. High school English was always my most fun subject to teach and vocabulary was always part of the curriculum. Bert, I think of you often and I'm so sorry for your loss. Maybe we can meet at a Gordon reunion. I know what you're going through since it's been only a few months since Daddy passed. You're all in my prayers.
