Obituary of Jack Harris

Mr. Jack Maddox Harris, age 86, of Barnesville was born November 12, 1923 in Pike County and died January 7, 2010 at Sacred Journey Hospice in McDonough. He had lived in Barnesville since 1987. He was the son of the late Mr. Marvin Thomas Harris and the late Mrs. Leila Hamilton Harris. He was preceded in death by his sister, Gladys Harris Miduski, by his half-sister, Betty Harris Colquitt, and by his half-brother, Thomas Harris. Mr. Harris was a member of the First Baptist Church of Barnesville. For more than 30 years, he was the Owner-Operator of Harris Appliance Company and Harris TV Shop in Jonesboro where he Retired in 1982. He was the Charter President of The Optimist International Club of Jonesboro, a Charter member of the Michael Gecik VFW Club # 6330 of Jonesboro, and was a member of Pinta Lodge # 88 F.& A.M. in Barnesville. Mr. Harris proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII, receiving an Honorable Discharge in July of 1947. He served in Egypt, Arabia, North Africa, China, Burma, and India flying equipment, personnel, and supplies over the CBI route. He received Medals including the Good Conduct, American Campaign, European-Asiatic-Middle Eastern Campaign, and the WWII Victory Medal. Mr. Harris was a life member of the D.A.V. (Disabled American Veterans). He is survived by his wife of 32 years - Lynell Harris of Barnesville ; His Daughters - Belinda Miller of Atlanta ; Kelly Murray of Norfolk, NY ; Lynn (& Vince) McCormack of Griffin ; Joan (& James) Jordan of Smyrna ; Pam (& Craig) Dukes of Blythewood, SC ; and Jerri (& Michael) Ferrell of Cumming. He is also survived by his Grandchildren - Ron, Robert, & Jolee Porter ; Drew & Nick Murray ; Kyle & Audrey Beckman ; Melissa Beckman ; Emily & Dave Vreken ; Phillip Jordan ; Patrick & Kristina Dukes ; and Heather & Chris Dantzler ; His Great Grandchildren - Sean & Brooke Smith ; Caleb, Alexa, & Jordanna Vreken ; Conner, Elizabeth, & Gabi Dantzler ; and Kylie Beckman. Several Cousins also survive. Funeral Services for Mr. Jack Maddox Harris will be conducted Sunday, January 10, 2010 at 2 O’Clock in the First Baptist Church of Barnesville with the Reverend Garth Forster officiating. Interment will follow in Lamar Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at the Williams Funeral Home on Saturday evening (1-9-10) from 6pm until 8pm.
