Obituary of Harold Matthews

Life Legacy Mr. Charles “Harold” Matthews, age 101, of Barnesville passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2015 in a Barnesville Healthcare Facility. He was the son of the late Mr. James A. Matthews and the late Malinda Graddick Matthews, and was also preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Louise Porch Matthews.. A native of Forsyth, he was a lifelong resident of Lamar County. Mr. Matthews was a WWII Veteran, having served in the U.S. Army in both Africa and Italy. He Retired as Personnel Manager from The William Carter Company. He was a member of The First Baptist Church of Barnesville, where he had served as a Life Deacon, Assistant Treasurer, Sunday School Teacher, and Training Union Director. Mr. Matthews also served as Past President of The Lamar Civic League, served on the Board of Trustees for Gordon College, and on the Lamar County Health Board. Mr. Matthews was also a member of both The American Legion and the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars). Mr. Matthews was also a past recipient of the Barnesville – Lamar County “Citizen of the Year”. Mr. Matthews is survived by three children: Linda Ann Hanner, Charles H. Matthews, Jr., and Randall Eugene “Randy” Matthews ; Seven Grandchildren: Rob, Jeff, Matt, Brian, Douglas, Nikki, & Katie ; and a number of other relatives also survive. Funeral Services for Mr. Charles “Harold” Matthews will be conducted Saturday, August 1, 2015 at 11 O’Clock in the First Baptist Church of Barnesville with the Reverend Garth Forster officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Williams Funeral Home on Friday, July 31, 2015 from 5:30pm until 8:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that Memorial Contributions be made to either the Music Department, or the Building Fund for the First Baptist Church of Barnesville, 200 Zebulon Street, Barnesville, GA 30204, or to the Donor’s Favorite Charity.
